Explanations

First is the name of the individual or firm. Second is the post office address in parenthesis, if different from the name of the town. Third.  The figures following the letter "r" indicate the number of the road on which party resides and will be found by reference to the map in the back part of the completed work. Where no road number is given, the party is supposed to reside in the village. Fourth.  Business or occupation. Fifth.  Figures placed after the occupation of a farmer indicates the number of acres owned or leased

THE FRITZ FAMILY
A highly respected family, "Fritz Hill' was named for the family. Philip Fritz, Philadelphia, was the first settler about 1795, soon after the Cole, Hess and Laubach families settled here. Battle calls the land, "Philip's wife's inheritance." She was Charlotte Deborgur, granddaughter of John Godhard. They raised ten children in obscurity with no schooling. The eldest son Henry married Margaret Roberts and raised a family on the land, his son George married Elsie Hess, held several township offices. He was born, lived and died on the homestead at Fritz Hill. He was a quiet man, raised in the wilderness but he was a local preacher. Jacob H. was next in age to George, he married Amanda Laubach on Feb. 15, 1846. Jacob raised William, a dentist in Michigan; Rosella (Hess), Michigan; Theodore, a drugist in Michigan; J.A. a dentist in Michigan; C.E., a photographer in Benton; Perry L., a druggist in Michigan; Flora, a teacher; plus several others. Jacob tells of farming all his life with primitive farm tools, and walking over two miles to go to school in a log building. He held many township offices and was a loyal Church worker, a Columbia County coroner, a Lt. in the militia; a Columbia county jury commissioner. He started out as a poor farm boy, got no monetary help but carved himself a farm and a comfortable home. Battle goes on but not clear who else followed. Most of the Fritz men were farmers, lumbermen and good citizens, holding public office. "For nearly a century, the Fritz family has been identified with Columbia County and its history, and some of its members have witnessed almost its entire transformation from a primitive wilderness to its present prosperous condition."

JAMES M SHULTZ, farmer, was born Feb. 26, 1828 in Benton Township, son of Samuel and Mary (McCarn) Shultz. Samuel. son of Daniel, who came to Greenwood Twp. from Northumberland in 1808. They had five children. Samuel went to Luzerne Co. where James was born. At seventeen James came to Columbia County to learn the carpenter and millwright trade with Peter Hess. He did a seven-year apprentice with Peter, then tried lumbering, soon going back to his trades; married Feb. 6, 1850 Elizabeth, daughter of George Mosteller, and had eleven children. He bought a farm soon after marriage and took to farming exclusively. He was a supervisor in 1885 and served as a constable.
