OBITUARY OF MONTGOMERY COLE
Montgomery Cole was buried at St. Gabriel's, Sugarloaf, on Tuesday June 5, 1877. He was aged 51 years and 9 months.
Mr. Cole was well known in the County of Columbia. He had been for some years
an acting Justice of the Peace, and for a term of three years one of the Board
of Commissioners of Columbia County.
He had been long suffering from consumption, which during the last winter rapidly
developed itself, though bearing the daily wasting of life with full fortitude
and resignation. It was the happy fortune of Mr. Cole to have taken great interest
in the re-erection of St. Gabriel's Church, to which he contributed liberally
both in labors and means. His desire to witness its completion was most intense,
and not only was that pleasure vouchsafed him, but he lived to be an eye witness
of its consecration, and also to receive himself, upon the same occasion, the
Apostolic rite of confirmation, and to be a partaker of the broken body and
shed blood, in commemoration of the last supper. To him the first and the last.
And thus he passed away in the communion of the church and in the comfort of
a reasonable, religious and holy hope.
