100 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
THE BENTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
Spring is tiptoeing through the Susquehanna Valley, and has
even come as far as the banks of the Fishing Creek. The Church
sign, donated so long ago by the Kocher Family, has been
refurbished. New paint, newly painted letters, and a new light
have made a big difference. Delicate spring pansies survived
the April snow, and grass planted last fall has begun to
germinate. Yes, we are almost ready for the Centennial Celebration.
From the MEET AND MINGLE Coffee Hour, where you can reconnect
with friends, old and new - through THE COMMUNITY SERVICE,
featuring the music of Pastor Lumpkin and Piper, Stuart Erwin,
- to the MEMORIAL DAY PARADE, this will be a Sunday like no
other. Our Church Float will throw patriotic ribbons to the
crowd, and honored church members will follow in Bruce
Crawford vintage convertible. This will be a joyous and
jubilant occasion, and a Centennial Celebration to remember.
We won't get a second chance, that is for sure.
A Celebration Sunday Dinner will be served under the tent from
1:00 until 3:00. Tickets, sold in advance, are $10.00 per .
person, and the meal is catered by The Old Filling Station, Main Street, Benton.
ENTERTAINMENT
After the parade, look for a lone piper standing on the bank of The Fishing
Creek, pulling us back to our heritage with the
haunting music of Scotland. Regiments were mustered to these plaintive chords,
heroes traditionally honored, and homage
respectfully paid. It is the music of our ancestors. Wander over to the Dam,
sit down under the tent, or join Mr. Stuart
Erwin on the creek bank and let his music take you back to the beginning.
Back in time.
And, moving right along, the infectious harmonies of the "B and
S" Barbershop Quartet will then serenade diners, as the
bountiful buffet begins. What a wonderful way to spend a
Sunday. If the weather cooperates, and "the creek don't rise,"
we should have a celebration to remember, a celebration to be thankful for.
Then, the youth of our future, the kids we used to be, The
Benton High School Band, will complete our journey and bring us
to the present. As we listen to the familiar patriotic songs,
thoughts and prayers go out to the sons and daughters and
grandchildren who are defending our country. Benton sons and
daughters and family. God Bless them and bring them home.
In conclusion, come back into the Sanctuary for a short musical
skit depicting our church through the years. Church Members in
period costume help us remember the world as it was in 1903,
our country in the year the church was built, our country as it is today.
This will be a day of Celebration, a day of Thanksgiving, and a
day of Prayer. Every moment of work that went into this day was
a prayer. A prayer of thankfulness for the privilege of growing
up in this beautiful and stalwart House of God, in this
beautiful town where life is so full and precious and
supportive. Many of us credit the values and principles we
live by, to being raised in the Benton United Presbyterian
Church. May 25, 2003 is our thank you for that.
Please plan to join us for this blessed event.
