Through December 13, 2008. The Monday after Thanksgiving is a day hundreds of thousands of hunters in the Commonwealth wait all year to celebrate. It is the day the sportsmen wallop the whitetails! Hunters must wear 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on the head, chest and back and are not allowed to hunt, chase or disturb deer with a firearm within 150 yards of any occupied building without the occupant's permission.

December 4, 2008. The German Heritage Society of the Susquehanna Valley will hold its December monthly meeting on Thursday from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Degenstein Library, 40 South Fifth Street, Sunbury. The public is invited to join members and guests as they celebrate the Christmas Traditions of the Germans and the German Americans. Members and guests are asked to bring ornaments to hang on a tree, decorations to set around the room, treats and recipes to enjoy, music to sing or play, and stories of Christmas traditions to share. Come help transform the meeting room into a German American Christmas wonderland. Christmas refreshments will be provided. This is the weekend for the Breath Of Heaven, a Christmas-musical production pby the North Mountain Community in the village of Central at the North Mountain Fire Co. grounds.  I had a chance to take a look at the outdoor set for the live-nativity production Monday.  When combined with beautiful music, live animals, and original costumes, this free production should be very enjoyable.  And our fine upstream neighbors are throwing in complimentary hot chocolate, cookies and bonfires.  Gather your family, friends and neighbors to witness the Christmas story first hand! December 6, 2008.  Learn how to keep birds coming back to your feeders year after year during a program from 2-3 PM Saturday at PPL’s Montour Environmental Preserve.  Dick Hess, noted nature photographer, will lead this program that will explore the various food sources and feeders that birds enjoy. Learn more about the various birds that visit your feeders as well as native plants that help to attract them.  The program, which is free and great for all ages, will be held at the Environmental Education Center. December 17, 2008 to April 29, 2009. Session II. An Introduction to pottery conducted by Sandra J. Tranor of Black Bear Pottery, Main Street. This class is for adults or children (11 and up). Meeting in a pottery studio setting, this is a beginning class in hand building with clay where students will experience basic forming methods used to create pottery. The class will stress the safety issues of working with various glazes, materials and equipment in preparation for more advanced lessons. Expect to get dirty, so participants are asked to bring an apron or old shirt. Classes to be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8 PM, the first class of each session will be held at The Center, with the remaining classes at the Pottery School located at 210 McHenry Alley, Benton. December 21, 2008. The Rev. Al Lumpkin will present the annual music program at the Benton Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, December 21, at 7 The musical group, String Theory, will be featured. Jeanie Lumpkin will play banjo and guitar, and Al will play guitar and mandolin. Jeremy Lumpkin will play bass. Warren Fisher is a retired professor of Economics at Susquehanna. and built the autoharps Rev. Lumpkin plays. Warren will play guitar and autoharp. Ann Fisher, Warren's wife, is a retired economics professor at Penn State and plays mountain dulcimer and autoharp. Judy Ellis plays hammered dulcimer. Judy is retired from Admissions at Bucknell University. The program is open to the public.

December 25, 2008. There will a preview meeting at 5 PM for "Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University" at the Benton Christian Church. January 6-February 3, 2009. The "Baby’s Clap Club” with Moms class is a wonderful way for babies ages 7-12 months to grow up. Long before babies can talk they have control over their hands. Teaching them to sign enhances baby's ability to communicate with parents and caregivers as well as provides a foundation for language development and understanding. Class meets on Tuesdays from 1:45 PM to 2:15 PM. Cost is $25 for members and $32 for non-members per session. A minimum of 4 children and a maximum 12 children in this class. January 6-February 3, 2009. The Magic Cookery Class will teach children (ages 3 to 8) to create their own real edible cookies and cupcakes. The recipes of these edible treats originate from children stories that are read and discussed in class. The preparation of the cookies and cupcakes does not require the use of any sharp items or a hot oven. Recipes do not include milk, eggs, or peanuts. The creative activities will stimulate the child's cognitive, physical and social development. Preschool Gymnastics & Tumbling is an exciting challenge for children from the age of 4 to 6 interested in gymnastics; it introduces them to floor exercises, balance-beam moves and springboard techniques. The purpose of this program is to teach children the fundamentals of gymnastics and train them to know and control their bodies and build positive relationships to physical activity. Class meets on Wednesdays from 9 AM to 9:45 AM. Cost is $30 for members and $38 for non-members per session and includes all materials and equipment. A minimum of 4 children and a maximum 8 children in these classes.

January 7-February 4, 2009. Pre-school picassos is a great way for children to improve their attention, work ability and discipline, also to create their own arts and crafts. With this program the children will learn many of life's invaluable skills: imagination, creativity, self-expression and aptitude to use a scissors, handling paper and fabric patterns, deciphering project instructions and generally learning to work with beans, pencils, paint, brushes without having to worry about the mess. They will learn elements of art such as line, color, form, texture, shape and space. Class meets on Wednesdays from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM for children that are 3 years from going into Kindergarten; 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM for children 2 years from going into kindergarten; and from 12:30 PM to 1:15p PM for children going to Kindergarten next year. January 8, 2009. Weight Watcher meetings will be Thursday evenings at the Northern Columbia Community & Cultural Center with weigh-in starting at 6:30 PM and a meeting at 7 PM. The first night, the leader will hand out the materials and information needed to follow the program. The eight-week session begins January 8 and runs through February 26, 2009. This is an "At Work" program; memberships are closed after the second week which would require participants to wait until the next session to start. Current, prepaid members of Weight Watchers in Columbia County can join this group and receive a refund from the other group. Members outside Columbia County must pay the local fee.

February 26-March 8, 2009. The Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Florida. There are over 5,000 acres of strawberries produced by some 2,600 farms, but the festival is also famous for citrus, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, squash, okra, peppers, beans, dairy products, eggs, ornamental horticulture, tropical fish, beef cattle, swine and other related products. One of our favorite stories from Plant City came about when a farmer was hauling manure and his truck broke down. A woman passing by asked what he was going to do with all the manure. The farmer replied that he was going to put it on his strawberries. The woman nodded her head for a moment, then said, "I may not be too bright, but I put whipped cream on mine."

More and more research is being done that shows that many of our degenerative illnesses can be slowed down and even reversed by changing the way we breathe. Shuman, III, will again appraise items brought in by customers.  Mr. Shuman has authored nine collector books and well donate one for a door prize.  There will also be a grand prize of a one-year individual membership.  Admission is $3.  Appraisals $3 each.  The show will take place at 42 Community Drive, Benton.  Individuals wishing to contact The Center should address correspondence to P. T he date that Microsoft will end support for Windows Operating System XP.  From that date on, questions directed to Microsoft about XP will be answered, but the answer will cost you.  The downloading of critical security patches for XP is expected to remain free.  Many users prefer Windows XP to the Vista operating system and there are ways of buying a new computer with XP in lieu of Vista loaded.
